For one week of the year, the hum of hustle and bustle can be heard on Fowey’s outskirts as hundreds flock to this quaint Cornish town to experience the Fowey Royal Regatta. Previously graced by Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Queen Elizabeth II, you too can feel like a royal during this historic British event – a great week of fun for land-lovers and seamen alike!
Beginning on 16th and finishing on 22nd August, the Regatta promises an array of spectacular events. The Giant Pasty ceremony is a favourite among the little ones, it comes with magicians and a visit from some of the animals at Newquay Zoo – it is bound to leave a smile on their faces. Firework displays over the river, live music, carnival parades full of colourful floats and locals in even more colourful costumes, plus the world famous Red Arrows ducking and diving through the skies is just a small taste of what to expect – and that’s not even including all that will be happening on the river!
On the water, there is plenty more to see with a full programme of boat races, including the town’s own ‘Troy’ class sailing boats, happening every day. And, for those who are looking for something a bit less serious, there’s raft racing and crab-catching competitions as well.
This very special August week is guaranteed to be a good time for all ages. With the whole town decorated with bright carnival colours, there’s no shame in leaving the maps at home allowing you to get lost as each street will be a treat for the eyes. Plus, with the theme of this year’s carnival being all things cartoony, you will definitely see some of your favourite childhood characters so make sure you bring a camera!
