Think Cornwall, think water sports and immediately taut-bodied surfers come to mind. But whether ready or not to join the new wave of surfing dudes, now coming in all shapes and ages, there are plenty of other reasons to head for the water, including the simplest reasons of all, to paddle or swim. Alternatively, why not learn a new sport such as kite-surfing, canoeing or windsurfing? Anglers might try their hand at sea fishing, chartered boats are available, try the quay at Mevagissey. Nearby Porthpean, St Austell, is a Blue Flag beach with canoeing and sailing. Charlestown, St Austell, has a Georgian harbour and diving and sailing from its coloured pebble beach. Pentewan Sands, St Austell, offers surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing and sailing, with canoe and dinghy hire. Carrick Roads, Falmouth, is ideal for beginners with its creeks, inlets and plenty of safe water to play in. Crinnis, St Austell, is fine for fishing, while sailing, kite-surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and surfing are all to be found at Polkerris Bay.
