So many sights to see, and atmosphere to soak up, in Cornwall’s character-filled towns and villages. Two of the most picturesque are the nearby ancient seaside towns of Fowey and Mevagissey, with their narrow lanes and fishermen’s cottages. Watch the daily catch unloaded at Mevagissey, where there are quayside pubs and open-air cafes lending an almost continental air, or trace the heritage of naval, industrial and literary history at Fowey, where each May they hold a festival in honour of Daphne du Maurier. Linked by river are a clutch of interesting small towns and villages such as Lostwithiel, Lerryn, Goland, Bodinnick, Pont and Polruan. Polperro is a sheltered harbour with a notorious reputation for smugglers of old, recorded in its smuggling museum. If you feel a case of coastal overload, Bodmin Moor is an awe-inspiring and unchanged area of wilderness, dominated by Cornwall’s highest point, Brown Willy at 1,377 ft. Bodmin is full of interest with museums, great houses and a steam railway. The cathedral city of Truro combines old and new and is known as ‘the shopping capital’ of Cornwall with major brand names and small specialist shops.
