There’s a wealth of history to be mined in Cornwall and its castles and museums offer diverse insights into its past. The ruins of St. Catherine’s Castle, an artillery fort built by Henry VIII in 1536, can be reached on foot from Fowey harbour. Restormel Castle was originally built in wood in the 1100s and rebuilt in stone in the 13th century. Caerhays Castle & Gardens, set in 60 acres, was built in the 1800s for the Trevanion family, who were ruined by debt, and later restored by mine owner and Cornish MP Michael Williams whose descendants live there to this day.
Maritime history is well documented in Cornwall’s specialist museums and there is a Shipwreck Rescue & Heritage museum at Charlestown, while Mevagissey Museum is housed in a boat builder’s workshop. Camelford hosts the British Cycling Museum and Cornwall’s oldest and most prestigious museum, the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, has extensive collections and exhibitions.
